ARABIAN, AL UZZA
Al Uzza was a very powerful pre-Islamic deity, quite possibly the guardian of Mecca. This was during the time of the Nabataeans of Petra, which is now Jordan. They worshipped her and their Temple of Winged Lions may have been dedicated to her. She was well loved and there were shrines in her honor both on the road to Mecca and in Mecca. It is believed she lived in acacia trees near Mecca. She would manifest as either a beautiful woman or a black stone with a cleft. Al Uzza is associated with wells and water.
